5 tips for designing or remodeling your bathroom

Designing your dream bathroom requires careful planning, consideration of people and daily activities, and finding the right materials. A toilet &

bath can become more than just a space for freshening up, it can become a haven for everyone. Here are 5 things to think about plus some
questions to ask yourself before designing or renovating your bathroom.

#1. FF,FL - Function First, Fancify Later.
Why have a glamorous toilet that’s difficult to sit on when nature calls in the middle of the night? Functional bathrooms are essential as they cater
to everyday needs. When deciding which toilet, shower, sink, or other piece to get, first ask yourself “Will this actually do what I need it to do,
when I need to do it?” and you’ll save the household from a ton of stress.
Consider your daily routines and what your family typically does in the bathroom: just the basics? Hair & makeup? Diaper changing & disposal?
Or something more? From here, you’ll figure out what type of items to get and what functions to consider.

#2. Spacing this Personal Space
The first main concern for spacing the bathroom is the plumbing; the pipes determine the layout of larger pieces like your toilet, tub, and shower.
This is totally fine to begin with. Afterward, you can freely think about arranging the other pieces. But how?

Earlier, we talked about what you do in the bathroom, now you should also consider how you do these things. Ask yourself “How do I go about
my bathroom business?” and imagine going through the space to figure out different considerations: will the bidet be an arms-length away from
the toilet?

Will the towel rack be too far from the shower? Will my vanity need more storage space? Will I need a stool or basketball player to reach my
cabinets? And when in doubt, the floor plan must come out!

#3. Ready for Relaxing
Bathrooms aren’t all about simply fulfilling our daily needs; they also work as private spaces for a little R&R after a tiring day — your own
sanctuary! The right ambiance goes a long way and accessories, big or small, have a huge impact in establishing a relaxing atmosphere. Ask
yourself “What calms me down? What can I do to relax?” and go from there.

If you have the space and budget, then you can get yourself a deluxe jacuzzi or a personal sauna. For a greener feel, you can bring in plants to
help cultivate a natural and refreshing energy (just be sure that it can survive in a very humid environment). For other small items, consider
dedicating a spot for your aromatherapy essentials.

Apart from bringing in items, the right aesthetic can work wonders. If you’re going for serenity, try sticking to softer hues of neutral or natural
tones like green instead of energizing contrasts like blue and orange. But of course, this all depends on the style you’re going for.

#4. Motif that Moves You
You deserve a good looking bathroom. That being said, ask yourself “what looks good to me?” and think about any color combinations,
architectural styles, or motifs that you fancy. Perhaps you’d like a nautical theme? Or a relaxing, monochromatic wood-heavy setup? What about
a bold, art-deco inspired design?

It also doesn’t hurt to look around your area and match the overall vibe to keep a sort of continuity from outside going in. Of course, if you already
have an overall style for the rest of your house, then the bathroom can follow suit. Choosing the style or motif is a great way of adding a dash of
your own personality to the home!

#5. Surface Selection Matters
On top of having a bathroom that looks good, you also need one that feels good and safe to be in. Ask yourself “what type of material should I
use for my flooring?” and consider the different people at home: do you have elderly folk at home? Kids running around? Persons with injuries or
disabilities?

You’ll need to know which variety of materials work best in bathrooms. Should you go with marble or tile? How about engineered wooden floors?
Each has inherent qualities that come with advantages and disadvantages. As an example, shiny floors look great but some can be slippery
when wet; while floors with more texture can be safer to step on but may require more effort to clean since they can accumulate dirt. In addition,
some materials can withstand moisture and the daily wear-and-tear while others may get damaged easily.

Bonus tip: Mind the Maintenance
Creating a beautiful space comes with a caveat: you must maintain it well to preserve the beauty. A gorgeous chandelier in the bathroom or a 6-
foot statue of Aphrodite might look awesome, but they might be challenging to clean and maintain.

There are other things to think about when it comes to renovations, but asking yourself these questions may help jumpstart the process and
make ideation easier. And, when in doubt, it never hurts to ask around! Best of luck with your next toilet & bath project.
